The San Francisco Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network.
We are a volunteer-run, non-profit organization consisting of a diverse group of activists, researchers, and dedicated Bay Area community members. We work at the local, state, and federal levels to protect and enjoy the places we love.
About us—For more than 34 years, the Surfrider Foundation has been protecting what you love.
We are a grassroots organization that was started in 1984 by a group of surfers that came together to protect Malibu from overdevelopment and pollution. Our chapter is part of one of the most powerful coastal protection groups in the world with over 500,000 members, 84 chapters, and 40 clubs.
The San Francisco Surfrider Foundation is responsible for protecting our diverse coastline. We strive to be an integral part of our community by organizing beach cleanups, educational events, social gatherings, and more. Based on our geography, we are on the front lines to the threat of sea level rise. We work with the City and numerous stakeholders, to make sure we protect our coastlines without destroying our beaches.
We invite everyone who is passionate about protecting and preserving San Francisco’s coastlines, ensuring the Bay Area’s beaches are accessible, protecting our ocean, and keeping plastic from polluting our waterways—to get involved.
Let’s find creative ways to prevent plastic pollution.
